In Miami airport
Fun airplane shots... SO TIRED!!
Arrival in Santo Domingo
The first day started off early at 2 AM when we left Findlay for our trip. We drove up to Detroit and boarded a plane to Miami. In Miami we completed our first devotion on Psalm 23. It relieved our fears and stress before we went to the Dominican as it said ¨¨I will fear no evil, for my God is with me¨¨ As we confronted our fears we boarded a plane to Santo Domingo to start our journey for the next nine days. Flying in was interesting. As we landed, all of us realized we were not only in a new country, but a whole new world. The landscape was filled with beauty! Palm trees, banana trees, cactus, mountains covered the landscape. We were welcomed at the airport with locals shouting ¨Americanos!¨¨ and clapping. As we walked out of the airport we met Moise, the director of the Mission Possible School in Barahona and the man with the most contagious laugh I´ve ever heard. We boarded a bus provided by Mission Possible. Everyone will tell you that the bus ride was the indescribable experience. We´ll tell you when we get home. Jajaja. On the bus we had a four hour ride to our final destination. We saw many different parts of the Dominican. We saw the good, the bad, and the extravagant. Which their extravagant is about that of our lower class in the States. I think we all realized to apreciate our homes, clothes, shoes, and especially air conditioning. The heat is crazy! After a full day of travel we arrived in the city of Barahona around seven o´clock. We were welcomed by the people of the school with an amazing Dominican meal of rice and beans, chicken, local pineapple, and melon. All of us went to bed to the blaring music, dogs parking, tons of heat, and our little cockroach friends of the batey, but yet we´re living in a mansion compared to everything around us. The first day overall really taught us to be thankful for the opportunities God has given us back home.
Oh… By the way. We´re all doing great! All of us are healthy, well, and ready for the next day of our journey. Adiós!!
Note from a mom,
Greetings all! What a day! After a van trip to Detroit airport, two plane rides, a 4 hour air conditioned (not) bus ride, we arrived safely and very, very thankful for God´s protection of us. It is hard to put into words the many thoughts and feelings we are thinking. The DR is a beautiful country but immersed in poverty. However, the Dominican people are Rich in smiles, kindness, and laughter. The feeling of the people calling "Ameicanos¨as they saw us travel past their villages was amazing. The joy they demonstrated to us will never be forgotten. Thank you for your prayers. God is Good!
Mucho amor,
Marisa Burkett and Patty Norden
